HOW to Write a Good CV as a Student in Nigeria ( Even with no Work Experience)

The good news is that you do not need years of work experience to create a good CV. As a student, you can build a strong CV by highlighting your education, skills, projects, certifications, achievements, volunteer activities, and other useful experiences.

In this guide, you will learn how to write a simple and professional CV as a student in Nigeria, even if you have never worked before.

What Is a CV?

A CV is a document that presents important information about you, including your education, skills, experience, achievements, and qualifications.

Employers, organizations, scholarship providers, and internship programs may use your CV to understand your background before deciding whether to consider you.

A good student CV should be:

  • Clear

  • Simple

  • Honest

  • Easy to read

  • Relevant to the opportunity

  • Free from unnecessary information

Can a Student Write a CV Without Work Experience?

Yes.

You do not need to have worked for a company before creating a CV.

My Experience With Creating a Student CV

When I was learning how to prepare my own CV, I realized that having no formal work experience does not mean you have nothing useful to include. Your education, skills, school projects, courses, volunteer activities, and other achievements can all help show what you can offer.I then visit LinkedIn, and Naukrigulf Indeed, that is where i start creating my CV.

My advice to students is to start building their CV early and update it whenever they learn a new skill, complete a course, or achieve something important

Instead of focusing only on employment, you can include things such as:

  • Your education

  • School projects

  • Computer skills

  • Communication skills

  • Leadership activities

  • Volunteer work

  • Online courses

  • Certifications

  • Personal projects

  • Competitions

  • Relevant achievements

  • Languages you speak

  • Clubs or organizations you participate in

For example, if you are a student who has learned web design, you can mention websites or practice projects you have created.

What Should a Student CV Contain?

A simple student CV can contain the following sections:

  1. Name and contact information

  2. Personal profile

  3. Education

  4. Skills

  5. Projects or experience

  6. Certifications and courses

  7. Achievements

  8. Volunteer activities

  9. References

You don't necessarily need every section. Choose the sections that are relevant to your situation.

1. Put Your Name and Contact Information at the Top

Start your CV with your full name.

Under your name, include appropriate contact details such as:

  • Phone number

  • Professional email address

  • City and country

  • LinkedIn profile, if you have one

  • Portfolio website, if relevant

Example

Mubarak Hassan
Kaduna, Nigeria
Email: yourname@gmail.com
Phone: 0800 000 0000
LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/yourname

Use an email address that looks professional.

Avoid using an email address with strange nicknames or unnecessary numbers if you are applying for a serious opportunity.

2. Write a Short Personal Profile

Your personal profile is a short introduction explaining who you are, what you are studying or interested in, and what you hope to achieve.

Keep it short—usually a few sentences are enough.

Example

Motivated university student with an interest in technology, web development, and cybersecurity. Currently developing practical digital skills through academic studies and personal projects. Interested in internship and learning opportunities that provide practical experience and professional development.

Do not copy this example word-for-word if it doesn't describe you. Your profile should accurately represent your own background.

3. Add Your Education

Education is particularly important when you are a student and don't have much employment experience.

List your most recent education first.

Include:

  • Name of institution

  • Course or program

  • Qualification

  • Dates or expected graduation date

Example

Diploma in Cyber Security Operations
Institution Name
2025 – Present

If you are currently studying at a university, college, polytechnic, or other institution, include your current program.

You can also include relevant secondary-school education when appropriate.

4. List Your Skills

Choose skills that are actually useful for the opportunity you are applying for.

Examples include:

  • Microsoft Word

  • Microsoft Excel

  • Communication

  • Research

  • Web design

  • HTML and CSS

  • Graphic design

  • Social media management

  • Problem solving

  • Teamwork

  • Public speaking

  • Basic cybersecurity

  • Digital literacy

Do not list dozens of skills simply to make your CV look longer.

It is better to list skills you genuinely understand.

5. Include Projects

Projects can be extremely useful for students who don't have formal work experience.

For example, you could include:

Personal Website Project

  • Designed and developed a simple website.

  • Practiced HTML and CSS.

  • Improved the website's layout and navigation.

Or:

Student Technology Project

  • Researched cybersecurity awareness.

  • Created educational materials explaining common online security risks.

  • Presented the information to other students.

Projects demonstrate that you have actually used your skills.

6. Add Courses and Certifications

Have you completed online courses?

You can include relevant certificates.

For example:

Introduction to Web Development
Online Learning Platform — 2026

Cybersecurity Fundamentals
Online Learning Platform — 2026

Only include courses and certifications that you actually completed.

Never invent certificates.

7. Include Achievements

If you have relevant achievements, add them to your CV.

Examples include:

  • Academic awards

  • Competitions

  • Debate competitions

  • Coding competitions

  • Leadership positions

  • School projects

  • Recognitions

  • Relevant publications

Even small achievements can demonstrate useful qualities when they are relevant to the opportunity.

8. Volunteer Experience Counts

Volunteer work can help strengthen your CV.

For example:

Volunteer — Community Education Program

  • Assisted with organizing learning activities.

  • Helped students with basic computer skills.

  • Supported the organization during community events.

Volunteer experience can demonstrate communication, teamwork, responsibility, and leadership.

9. Keep Your CV Short and Easy to Read

If you are a student with limited experience, you usually don't need a very long CV.

Focus on the information that is relevant to the opportunity.

Use:

  • Clear headings

  • Short paragraphs

  • Bullet points

  • Consistent formatting

  • Readable fonts

  • Enough spacing

Avoid filling your CV with unnecessary information.

Simple Student CV Template

You can use this structure as a starting point:

Common CV Mistakes Students Should Avoid

1. Spelling mistakes

Read your CV carefully before sending it.

A simple spelling mistake can make your application look careless.

2. Making up experience

Never claim that you worked somewhere when you did not.

Honesty is more important than making your CV look impressive.

3. Using an unprofessional email address

Create a simple professional email address using your name where possible.

4. Making the CV unnecessarily long

If you don't have much experience, don't add irrelevant information just to increase the number of pages.

5. Using too many colors and designs

A CV should look professional and easy to read.

A simple layout is often better than an overly decorated design.

6. Sending the same CV everywhere

Whenever possible, adjust your CV to match the opportunity.

For example, a CV for a web-design internship should emphasize web-development skills and projects rather than unrelated information.

Should Students Put Their Age or Date of Birth on a CV?

This depends on the specific application and its requirements.

Don't automatically include personal information simply because you have seen it on another CV.

Follow the requirements of the employer, scholarship, internship, or organization you're applying to.

Should You Put Your Photograph on Your CV?

A photograph is not automatically necessary.

Only include one when the application specifically requests it or when there is a clear reason it is appropriate.

How to Save Your CV

After creating your CV, save a final copy in PDF format when the application instructions allow or request PDF.

Use a professional filename.

For example:

Mubarak_Hassan_CV.pdf

Avoid filenames such as:

CV final final 2.pdf

A professional filename makes your application look more organized.
